Debbie Rittner:
My aunt Ida’s botched abortion in Atlantic City, one hundred years ago, was a family secret that profoundly affected 4 generations of women: Ida, her mother, her sister, my mother and me. The legacy burden was carried from one generation to another. The Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade means that many women may face the same situation again where women might risk their lives in illegal abortions and untold suffering for their families. My story is a personal one that has never been told and draws on court testimony from the Court of Atlantic City, front page headlines from the Philadelphia Inquirer, and my mother’s personal stories.
