If you want to know who a people are, don’t listen to the stories others tell about them. Search for the stories they tell about themselves.
As a kid I learned about Slaves. Slave is a term someone else gives you. It means you are less than, smaller, not as human, not worthy, not capable, and not smart.
What I didn’t learn was what the people from Africa thought about their plight. Exploring the folklore and characters they shared to help them stay strong and face the darkness through The Middle Passage and beyond gives us insight to the promises they made to themselves and their children.
These stories tell us about the people who fought until their descendants won the right to live as the equals they always knew they were.
