Hi ! Is it December already? Where has the year gone?! With the arrival of December also comes the arrival of cold weather and the ever-present chance of snow at the NSN office. The NSN staff would like to remind you to stay safe, patient, and positive this holiday season. The Story Now! interview series is under development during the month of December. NSN is always interested in hearing about unique and interesting projects happening in the storytelling community, so make sure to send information about those projects to the NSN office. The economy could use more storytellers

College degrees in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) are seen as lucrative, reliable path to a career. But an uptick in STEM majors since the financial crisis means English majors are down 25.5%, which appears to be worrying some economic leaders.
That’s because a number of prominent economists are concerned they aren’t doing a good enough job telling economic stories. The governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia, Philip Lowe, recently urged economists to spend less time on numbers and more time on storytelling...

PARTNER PROGRAM NEWS
The Story Center at Mid-Continent Public Library
The Story Center, established in 2013, celebrates and develops writers, performers, and filmmakers through access to free resources, workshops, and a community of storytellers. The Story Center offers a Storytelling Certificate Program in partnership with Metropolitan Community College, The Story Center Speaker Series in partnership with Rainy Day Books, a local author fair every November, and the award-winning Woodneath Press, which allows authors to see their work in print. This partnership supports NSN's mission to advance all forms of storytelling within the community by engaging the community through the use of storytelling and developing synergies that will encourage the growth of storytelling in the community.
Story Camp Presenter Needed
The Story Center is developing a Story Camp for teens that will run from July 13-17, 2020, in conjunction with the Summer Learning Program theme: Imagine Your Story: Fairy Tales, Mythology, and Fantasy.
Our ideal class size will be fifteen 12-15-year-olds per track. Funding from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation allows us to offer this program free-of-charge to participants as well as to provide stipends for presenters. Presenters should have experience with teens and will need to teach five programs in oral storytelling. Each program needs to last 2-3 hours and by the end of the five day Story Camp, we would like the teens to be able to perform a story or take a sample of their work home with them. If you are interested in this opportunity, please submit your proposal no later than December 31, 2019.
Story Center Proposals Being Accepted
The Story Center is looking for educational programs about written, oral, and digital storytelling. We accept program proposals from a vast array of fields and backgrounds. Our programming needs change from quarter to quarter, so we will keep your proposal on file for future consideration. We are currently scheduling our August-October 2020 cycle and beyond!

Please note:
- MCPL policy prohibits selling of products or services during programs, with exception for authors and musicians (who may sell books, CDs and/or DVDs). Exceptions have also been made for non-profit organizations and/or community partners.
- We require all presenters to fill out a W9 form for payment. After the completed program, presenters must submit invoice.
- Please note our programs take place on weekday evenings and weekends.
- We may require an in-person meeting to discuss the details of your program.

How Storytelling Can Help Young Doctors Become More Resilient

I recently stood in front of a group of emergency room residents at my hospital and asked an unusual question. “Has any of you ever judged your attending physician for not trying hard enough to save a patient’s life?” Then I looked around the room. But like every time I’d given this presentation, there were no takers.
I can’t say I was surprised. I was piloting a new program which uses storytelling to help young doctors reflect on how they handle the emotional and psychological toll of caring for suffering patients...
