Where There's Smoke, There's Dinner: Stories of a Seared Childhood
Eugene and Mary Glick Indiana History Center450 W. Ohio StreetIndianapolis, IN 46202United States3175769848Regi Carpenter is the youngest daughter in a family that pulsates with contradictions: religious and raucous, tender but terrible, unfortunate yet irrepressible. These honest tales, some hilarious, some heartbreaking, celebrate the glorious and gut-wrenching lives of four generations of Carpenters raised on the Saint Lawrence River in upstate New York. From teenagers struggling to find their identity, to disabled veterans grappling with the aftermath of war and change, to the complications and sweetness of love between family members, this collection of linked short stories holds the universal message that life's difficulties are softened by love and fortitude…and family.

If These Walls Could Tell: Shrewsbury-Windle House in Madison, Indiana
Indiana Landmarks Center1201 Central AvenueIndianapolis, IN 46202(317) 576-9848Upon its completion in 1849, Charles Shrewsbury’s Greek Revival-style home in Madison defined antebellum elegance, with high-ceilinged rooms, decorative columns, and floor-to-ceiling windows framing views of the Ohio River. Architect Francis Costigan displayed his genius in the Shrewsbury home’s crowning feature: a freestanding spiral staircase ascending from the front foyer up through the entire height of the house. It was a showplace built for entertaining. Lou Ann Homan tells its story.
