told by Karen Rae Kraut
Back in 1991 I heard this story sung by Sam Hinton, the extraordinary naturalist, oceanographer, folklorist and folk singer based in San Diego, California. Sam learned it from Guy Carawan, who learned it from Mrs. Janie Hunter of John’s Island, South Carolina. Sam died in 2009, and I always think of him when I tell my version, which he would probably say is way too long!
