Mary Shea Rys is a retired Reading Specialist and member of the NEST. Mary started Storytelling in 1997 and, during her 41 year teaching career, taught Storytelling to children as an extracurricular activity, while simultaneously honing her performance skills for children, families and separate adult events. SInce her retirement from the public schools, Mary has the great pleasure of traveling to schools, libraries, churches and community venues, sharing poems, songs and stories. Mary teaches a week-long Storytelling Camp to school-age children several times a year at the Liverpool Public Library in Liverpool, NY; teaches courses in Storytelling to adults at several local libraries, and is a yearly lecturer each summer at the Chautauqua Institute, where she offers Storytelling Courses to adults. Mary was names Liverpool Teacher of the Year in 2011, received an award as CNY Educator of. the Year in 2023 from the NY State Assembly Exceptional Women of NY program, was inducted into the Liverpool District Fine Arts Hall of Fame in 2024, and was welcomed to The Everson Museum in Syracuse to perform her original story, "The Story Hobo" during their Community Storytelling Showcase. She has recently added stories involving Women of the Bible to her repertoire. Mary's website outlines the various programs, courses and performances she can offer to groups and varying venues. She has brought her Storytelling programs as far south from Central New York as South Carolina and Florida, as far east as Kentucky and Texas, and is always expanding her Storytelling skills and repertoire.
