Summary:
Dan Yashinsky has been the storyteller-in-residence at Baycrest Health Sciences for three years. He says, “I feel that ‘storycare’ should be an essential part of health care. Storycare means creating times and places in the hospital for people to tell, hear, imagine, and remember stories.”
He has found different types of stories extremely useful for people with dementia, psychiatry patients being treated for severe depression as well as patients in the palliative unit.
He gives an example of a woman with advanced cancer who needed a story to tell her grandchildren. The story he shared was from Nigeria about tortoises, human beings and stones. (See the second story on this web page.)
