YES Story Lab

An added benefit of YES membership is free registration in our quarterly-ish Story Labs, online workshops led by storytellers. Non-members may attend for $15.

We’re pleased to announce our second Story Lab for October 4, 2019. Yes, YES, we know that this is at the same time as the National Storytelling Festival. That’s why we’re planning to record the Story Labs, so members who can’t make the online workshop can watch later. Look for more info on that soon.

Brian Sturm is intrigued by the theatrical concept of the fourth wall, an idea attributed to Denis Diderot in 1758, when he wrote, “Whether you write or act, think no more of the audience than if it had never existed. Imagine a huge wall across the front of the stage, separating you from the audience, and behave exactly as if the curtain had never risen.” Actors perform as if the audience isn’t there, but what about storytellers? Join us for a lively online workshop on the topic.

Dr. Sturm began telling stories on his older brother about the age of four, but his professional career as a freelance storyteller of world folktales began 30 years ago as an outdoor educator of fifth grade children in the redwood forests of California. He has since built a teaching and research career centered on the entrancing power of narrative, and he has performed internationally for festivals, libraries, and schools.
