The Itinerant Storyteller

Told by Ruth Stotter

Listen to story

Why do we tell stories? What does our audience want from their storytelling experience? How do we prepare and perform our stories? This modified Zen story tries to address some of these questions and, hopefully, provides some answers. One of the reasons I like this story is that it reminds me why I became a storyteller. Performance is important and of equal importance are the non-literal messages we convey – the sub-texts. In this piece, the story within-the-story is structured as a reverse-frame story. Momotaro is a well-known traditional Japanese folktale.
